Did you know that National Smile Month 2019 has officially begun? Across the UK, dentists, doctors, schools, community organisations and many others involved in health care are joining forces to help encourage positive attitudes to oral health – and hopefully, get people smiling with confidence. Read on to find out more about this annual campaign and what you can do to get involved.
National Smile Month is held every year between May and June. This year, the event runs from 13th May to 13th June – so now is the perfect time to get involved.
National Smile Month brings together thousands of individuals and organisations to highlight three key messages which are key to developing and maintaining a healthy mouth. These are:
Ultimately, the aim of the campaign is to help everybody achieve good physical and mental wellbeing by improving their oral health – no matter how old or young you are or where you live.
National Smile Month isn’t just about education and stressing the importance of a healthy mouth, however – the key to the success of the campaign is that we have lots fun doing it!
The campaign encourages dental and health professionals, schools, pharmacies, community groups, colleges and workplaces – in fact anyone with an interest in good oral healthcare – to join in and help educate, motivate and communicate positive oral health messages and improve the quality of smiles all around the world.
With the help and enthusiasm of those who are passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles and improving the quality of life for others, National Smile Month sees thousands of events and activities take place, educating and engaging local communities about the importance of a healthy mouth.
The National Smile Month campaign is run by The Oral Health Foundation, an independent charity that has spent the last 45 years working hard to improve oral health and wellbeing in the UK and around the world. They provide expert, independent and impartial advice on all aspects of oral health directly to those who need it most.
Their core mission is to address the inequalities which exist in oral health, changing people’s lives for the better with the support of governments, dental and health professionals, manufacturers, the dental trade, national and local agencies and the public.
The founding fathers of the Oral Health Foundation wished to see the preventive message that ‘Teeth are for Life’ spread as widely as possible, with the aim of improving the overall oral health of everyone – a message that is as important today as it has ever been.
One of the simplest ways to support National Smile Month is to help spread awareness – especially among younger people. If you have children or work closely with children, consider getting involved with an event near you. You can also support the campaign directly through the official National Smile Month Website.
Another great way to be part of National Smile Month is to make sure that you and your family are up to date with your dental checkups.

National Smile Month is a UK wide campaign that has been held every year since its establishment in 1977. It’s mission is to promote good oral health for people of all ages by engaging communities and stimulating dialogue with health professionals. The event is organised by British oral health charity, the Oral Health Foundation. Every year, the campaign helps to raise awareness of important health issues and make a positive difference to the oral health of millions across the country.
Supported by dentists, teachers, pharmacies, health professionals, other community-based organisations and even workplaces, National Smile Month helps to educate, motivate and communicate positive oral health messages and improves the quality of smiles all around the UK.
More importantly than anything else, it encourages both adults and children to embrace good oral hygiene habits in a way that is fun and enjoyable.
There are three key messages at the heart of National Smile Month:
Together, these three simple steps go a long way in helping us develop and maintain a healthy mouth.
National Smile Month was first celebrated in 1977 and has grown in popularity and participation ever since, led by a wide ranging group of people who have one thing in common – a passion for health and wellbeing.
Since its creation just over 40 years ago, National Smile Month has helped facilitate thousands of events and projects, and continues to act as the spearhead campaign for providing organised grassroots activities such as fun days, talks, sponsored events, roadshows, displays, open sessions and competitions – all which have the ultimate goal of engaging people in the importance of oral health.
Firstly, look out for events at your local school, playgroup, community centre or health centre. You might also want to ask your dentist about any events they may be participating in.
In addition, visit the official website http://www.nationalsmilemonth.org/ where you will find lots of resources and information to help you get involved.

But having a healthy smile is not just important for our oral health. Smiling is actually good for loads of other reasons too. So if you need help to get your smile confidence back, call Perfect Profiles today for a free consultation on 01582 518100.
We might be forgiven for thinking we smile because we’re happy, not the other way around. But psychologists have found that putting on a smile, even when we don’t feel like it, boosts mood.
If you’re generally happy and smile a lot (see number 1) you could live up to 10 years longer than people who don’t, according to studies at several North American universities.
Medical studies have shown that smiling relaxes the body and allows the immune system to work better. So now we have the perfect excuse to watch hours of funny cat videos.
Telling someone to “grin and bear it” might actually be good advice after all. Research says that smiling when doing something difficult actually reduces stress good news for your ticker.
Discover the instant facelift without going under the knife yes, it’s a smile. The muscles we use to smile lift the face and knock years off.
69% of people find a woman wearing a smile more attractive than when she is wearing makeup. So if you want to get noticed ladies, flash those pearly whites.
You might think you need to look serious to show you’re sorry not always. A study has shown that people are kinder to wrongdoers if they smile.
Smiling makes us seem more sociable, successful and confident – not to mention trustworthy. Just the sort of qualities that can give us the edge over the competition in the workplace.
If you smile at everyone, around half of the people you meet will smile back. Smiling instantly make us seem friendly and approachable and helps build rapport.
You’ll feel more motivated and work harder after smiling and laughing. So, the next time your boss catches you looking at silly memes on the net you know what you can say…
May marks the start of National Smile Month – a month long campaign to improve the nation’s oral health.
Over the next four weeks to June 19 people all over the UK will be pulling out those little red smileys and we here at Perfect Profiles will be no exception.
Our staff are armed with their smiles on a stick and will be encouraging our patients to get brushing and start smiling as we try and spread the word on how important it is to look after your teeth.
The key messages of the campaign are simple – to make sure you brush your teeth twice a day, regularly visit a dentist and reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks to lower the risk of dental-related problems.
Do this and you will maintain a healthy mouth and smile.
With dental clinics like us helping to raise awareness of these messages along with health professionals, schools and community groups we hope to improve the standard of oral health across the nation.
But no matter how hard we shout and drive the messages home here at Perfect Profiles we know that for some it is already too late.
For some people the damage is already done and they have lost the confidence to smile.
That’s where we can help.
